Tan contundente como cierto. La Casa Blanca ha suprimido todas las partidas presupuestarias para reparar el Telescopio Espacial Hubble. Ni robots, ni transbordadores ni nada. El dinero asignado a la NASA para el año 2006 y que debía hacerse cargo de arreglar de alguna manera el observatorio espacial ha sido eliminado de un plumazo y ya le han dicho a la Agencia que al final de la vida útil del Telescopio se encarguen de darle un último empujón hacia la atmósfera.
Como esto ha pasado en el fin de semana de momento no ha tenido demasiada repercusión y la NASA tiene que decidir cuando anunciará oficialmente los planes, aunque se cree que el señor O'Keefe lo hará el 7 de febrero. Estos planes descartan por completo cualquier clase de reparación pero incluyen una partida para ponerle al Hubble un módulo de propulsión que deorbitará con seguridad la nave en el Océano Pacífico, por lo que será necesario un lanzamiento con este módulo, algo también experimental y que nunca antes se ha hecho.
Los astrónomos se han mostrado muy sorprendidos por esta decisión y aún esperan que el Congreso rectifique esta medida y expresan su temor ante la falta de un sustituto a tiempo y sobre todo por la gran cantidad de ciencia que no se va a poder realizar, sobre todo cuando los nuevos instrumentos llevan tiempo preparados para volar. Se han hecho estimaciones que indican que alrededor del año 2007 los giróscopos y las baterías comenzarán a fallar, haciendo incontrolable la nave. Si para entonces el telescopio no tiene acoplado el módulo de deorbitación, podría caer en cualquier parte del planeta, con el potencial peligro que eso implica.
Dado el gran apoyo popular que tiene el Telescopio, algunos investigadores no han perdido aún la esperanza y creen que el Congreso pedirá una misión del Transbordador para repararlo y aumentar su vida útil en 5 años más.

no hay quien entienda a la NASA
si puedes Pedro dime cuando a costado la tonteria de la Deeper Space cuyo fin científico es más que discutible y cuanto costaría la reparación del Hubble.

Por más que nos esforcemos en comprenderlo esto no tiene sentido. Si la vida útil de un aparato se puede extender de forma relativamente barata y los beneficios de dicha reparación pueden ser tremendos...¿por qué no hacerlo?

¡Uy juanjaen! jajaja. Creo que la Deep Impact tiene un altísimo valor. Los cometas son cuerpos muy poco conocidos y lo importante de esa misión es que el impacto sacará miles de toneladas de material de su interior que será analizado por la sonda que lo sobrevuele. No son solo los 'fuegos artificiales' que provocarán, sino lo que contienen ;-)
La misión de reparación del Hubble con el Transbordador (que es la más barata de las dos opciones) costaría más de 1.000 millones de dólares. Aunque no tenga sentido la comparacion, la sonda Deep Impact que pertenece al programa de misiones de bajo coste 'Discovery' tiene un precio total (diseño, lanzamiento, naves, operaciones y analisis de datos) de 240 Mill. de dólares.

Uff, la cosa está muy mal. Hasta que el nuevo telescopio espacial esté en órbita pasará bastante tiempo, y recuerdo que no observará en regiones del ultravioleta, tan importantes en muchos temas de la Astrofísica actual (estrellas masivas, enanas blancas, formación estelar bruta, y otros procesos energéticos...).
En fin, veremos qué pasa al final. (yo, por si las moscas, estoy empezando a centrar mi investigación en longitudes de onda de radio, que no hace falta salir al espacio para observarlas, y ALMA y SKA están cada vez más cerca, pero sin olvidar mis rayas en el óptico, of course)

Hay varias cosas que simplemente no entiendo acerca de esta decision de la Nasa.Los planes para el Hubble eran, una vez concluida la mision ,devolverlo a la tierra en la bodega del transbordador y esto era asi NO porque ,como he leido en algunas revistas de curiosidades cientificas por llamarlas algo , quisieran exponerlo en un museo sino que se trataba de la forma mas segura de sacarlo de la orbita.
Hubble fue hecho a la medida del Transbordador : puesto en el espacio por el, mantenido por el y retornado a tierra por el. ¿que los capitostes se han negado a repararlo porque cuesta dinero? Bueno, resulta comprensible maxime en esta epoca donde el bautismo oficial de muchas misiones espaciales es su cancelacion a priori ( hasta que alguien demuestra al congresista de turno los beneficios que para su estado va a tener el proyecto ).Lo que no acierto a vislumbrar es como demonios se lo va a montar la nasa sin transbordadores. ¿Se gastaran 1000 millones de dolares desarrollando un chisme automatico que se acople al telescopio ? eso para mi si que es desperdiciar el dinero.

Al hilo de lo que comenta walter_orion, recuerdo el comentario que ya hice en los foros de sondasespaciales: el coste de reparación del Hubble (1.000 millones de dólares), es más o menos lo que gasta USA en Irak ¡CADA SEMANA!. Y ciertamente puede que la misión sea peligrosa, pero no creo que los astronautas corran más riesgo que los soldados en Irak, pero bueno, se ve que piensan que la vida de un soldado vale mucho menos que la de un astronauta. Estos chicos son así.
